As with many technologies however, there is a risk that the hype cycle runs wild and we start treating telehealth as a silver bullet that will save all of our healthcare woes, especially given the considerable resource constraints faced by many health systems around the world. No silver bullet. Alas, whilst this is indeed true for some patients, a recent study published in the British Medical Journal revealed that telehealth is not the answer for everyone. Now, first of all, the inevitable ...
Telehealth is clearly the future for much of the healthcare industry, but the great concern is that the laws and regulations that are required to guide this expansion are unable to keep pace with the growth. A significant danger to the telehealth movement is the risk of abuse and fraud by unscrupulous providers and fraudsters.
Telehealth can provide health care services at times and places where families and caregivers may not usually be able to get those services. For example, pediatric specialists practicing in large cities can use telehealth to see children who live hundreds of miles away in small community emergency departments.
Telehealth may provide opportunities to make health care more efficient, better coordinated and closer to home. Research about telehealth is still relatively new, but it's growing. For example, studies have shown that both telephone-based support and telemonitoring of vital signs of people with heart failure reduced the risk of death and hospitalization for heart failure and improved quality of life.
