The 7 Habits of Healthy Vegans One Green Planet

Just Now

1. Eat legumes. They’re packed with protein, with the bonus of a big dose of fiber. (No protein-rich animal food can claim that!). Choose three servings of these foods—which include cooked beans, peas, lentils, tofu, tempeh, soymilk, veggie meats, peanuts and peanut butter—every day.
2. Pile your plate with fruits and veggies, and vary your choices. Vegans are ahead of the game here, since they tend to eat more of these foods than omnivores.
3. Get enough calcium. It’s not the end-all and be-all of bone health, but calcium does matter and it’s an area where some vegans fall short. Best sources for vegans are fortified juices and plant milks, calcium-set tofu, kale and collards.
4. Choose whole grains. Every single bite of grain you eat doesn’t have to be unprocessed. If you enjoy crusty French bread with soups and salads, or regular pasta in your lasagna, that’s fine.
5. Be smart about fats. Limiting fatty foods is good, but avoiding them completely isn’t. Some high fat foods like nuts and seeds contribute important nutrients to vegan diets.
6. Don’t shun supplements. All vegans need vitamin B12 supplements (or fortified foods.) And many vegans opt for supplements of the omega-3 fats DHA and EPA (although the jury is out on whether they are beneficial).
7. Be flexible and have fun with your vegan diet. Vegans are automatically off to a good start with food choices. Diets built around plant foods are free of cholesterol, low in saturated fat and high in fiber.

Is a Vegan Diet Healthy? 6 Tips on How To Be a Healthy

Estimated Reading Time: 7 mins
1. Eat, eat, eat. The first tip I give anyone when they want to go vegan is to eat your heart out. I think a super common reason why people might report feeling weak on a vegan diet is because they simply aren’t eating enough.
2. Eat the rainbow. We all know that we should be eating our greens, but that shouldn’t be the only color on your plate. When building your meals, challenge yourself to be colorful.
3. Nuts and seeds are your best friends. Some people make fun of vegans for eating “bird food” or “rabbit food,” which is so not true! But in the case of nuts and seeds, you gotta own it!
4. Get to know your blood tests. This is a must, no exceptions. If you want to know how to be a healthy vegan, you need to get blood tests done at least once a year to see where your levels are at.
5. Supplement where necessary. This goes hand in hand with blood tests. You get blood tests to know where you’re lacking and where you need to supplement.
6. Make veganism work for you. Lastly, the secret on how to be a healthy vegan is to not get caught up in the specifications of what a “vegan” is. Yes, some vegans will come running with torches to correct anyone who does something “wrong” on this lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it healthy to have a vegan or vegetarian diet?

Vegetarian and vegan diets can be healthy, but they can lack certain nutrients. You may have to use a little creativity to ensure you get enough protein, calcium, iron, and vitamin B12. You can find many of these nutrients in eggs and dairy if you're vegetarian, and from plant sources if you're vegan. But you may need an added boost.

Is there such a thing as a dairy free vegan?

While all vegan food is dairy-free, not all dairy-free food is vegan. When grocery shopping, you may want to know whether a food is vegan and/or dairy-free. Products suitable for either diet are often labeled vegan or dairy-free.

Why do I want to be a gluten free vegan?

"I believe there is no greater culinary pleasure than sitting down to delicious and nutritious food that not just supports our health, but saves our animals and protects our world, and no auto-immune condition should stand in the way of that." Confidence is useful in living as a gluten-free vegan.

Is there anything easy to do as a vegan?

Vegan clothing and apparel is easy to find. You can likewise switch to cruelty-free beauty products. Just start with the easy stuff, and work your way forward. That finishes this vegan introduction. You apply the vegan concept to eat and live more healthfully, in a way that reflects your values.
