A 12Step Program to Eating Healthier Than Ever Before zen habi…

1. Choose broth-based soups rather than cream-based ones (most of the time). It’s ok to indulge in a creamy tomaso basil once in a blue moon, but know that dairy cream is rich in saturated fat and just 2 tablespoons provides 2 grams of saturated fat which is 10% of the daily value!
2. If you really want a cream-based soup, portion control is key. Go for a cup rather than a bowl size. Then fill up with veggies and lean protein.
3. Choose vinaigrette-based salad dressings rather than cream-based. Much like the soups, creamy dressings are higher in fat and saturated fat than vinaigrette-based ones.
4. Choose grilled, baked, roasted, broiled and steamed foods rather than fried options. We wish there was a way to fry those mozza sticks without them absorbing all that extra oil!
5. Portion your nuts and seeds. Nuts (and seeds) although small, are densely packed with calories due to their oil content (albeit healthy fat). It’s easy to go overboard on these since they are so small and delicious, so its best to be mindful of portion sizes, especially if you are trying to lose weight.
6. Split a dinner entree with someone. If you’re eating out, chances are you’ll be grabbing drinks too. Considering those added liquid calories, splitting an entree is a great idea.
7. Choose a sensible appetizer as your entree. By sensible we mean relatively healthy (i.e. it includes some sort of vegetable and isn’t deep fried). This is a great idea if no one is available to split a meal with.
8. Share dessert. Think twice about dessert: that brownie a la mode probably has as many calories as a cheeseburger and fries meal (no joke!). Even if it is a special occasion, you should share dessert with a few others to split those calories.
9. Use small plates and bowls for serving your food. If you have 8 inch plates, use those instead of the regular 10 inch ones. Even if you fill your plate, you’ll automatically serve yourself less food.
10. Substitute sugar-filled jams and jellies with “no-sugar added” versions. Fruit is naturally sweet–why add more sugar? If you are an avid pb&j-er or just like something sweet on your morning toast, give the no-added sugar version a try.

10 Baby Steps to Healthy Eating – A Couple Cooks

Reviews: 13
Published: Dec 16, 2015
Estimated Reading Time: 8 mins
1. More, Not Less. Many of us immediately think of all the things we can’t eat when transitioning to a healthier way of eating. Instead of focusing on what’s off limits, think about what you can add more of.
2. Rethink Your Standbys. Like many of you, I get home from work exhausted and am often overwhelmed by getting a quick, healthy dinner on the table for myself and my family.
3. Read Labels. Perhaps one of the most important steps you can take toward healthy eating is the simple act of reading labels. Before buying any food product, flip the package over and read the list of ingredients.
4. Skip the Chemicals, Additives, and Preservatives. This one is huge. Processed foods often contain artificial ingredients, colors, and preservatives that are at best devoid of nutritional value and at worst harmful to your overall health.
5. Think Long Term. Making habit changes can be difficult and at times can seem daunting. Try to remember that this is a marathon, not a sprint. You don’t have to change everything all at once.
6. Keep Breakfast and Lunch Simple. If you’re working toward adding more healthy habits to your eating routine, give yourself a break and keep breakfast and lunch simple.
7. Always Carry Snacks. Do you find it’s fairly easy to eat healthy at home, but that all the good intentions go out the window when you’re out and about?
8. Cook at Home. I’m a working mom and the convenience of eating out can be super tempting, especially at the end of an exhausting day. Regardless of how tired I may be, I try to eat the majority of meals at home (or at least homemade meals on the go).
9. Upgrade Your Splurges. Life is no fun without splurges, especially when it comes to food. Think about how to upgrade some of your favorite splurge-worthy recipes and then research some ways to make it healthier.
10. Be Kind. My takeaway message when it comes to healthy eating is always the same: be kind to yourself. Remember that healthy eating is simply a way to take better care of your body.

11 Simple Steps to a Healthy Diet WebMD

1. Healthy Eating Tip No. 1: Switch to 100% whole-wheat or whole-grain bread. Just switching to whole grains from refined grain products benefits your body about 10 different ways, from lengthening your life span to helping control weight to reducing your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
2. Healthy Eating Tip No. 2: Use mustard on sandwiches instead of mayo. Mayonnaise or mayo-based spreads are one of the worst condiment choices because they're usually high in calories, fat grams, and omega-6 fatty acids.
3. Healthy Eating Tip No. 3: Make your oatmeal with skim or 1% milk instead of water. Whether you prefer instant or regular oatmeal, this simple step will boost the protein and calcium in your breakfast.
4. Healthy Eating Tip No. 4: Add a little ground flaxseed to yogurt and smoothies. Do this every time you reach for a yogurt or order a smoothie. Adding 2 tablespoons of flaxseed adds 4 grams of fiber, 2.4 grams of healthy plant omega-3s fatty acids, and some healthy phytoestrogens (lignans) to your snack.
5. Healthy Eating Tip No. 5: Use spinach leaves instead of iceberg lettuce in salads. A 4-cup serving of raw spinach leaves has 20 milligrams of omega-3s, 9800 IU vitamin A, 5,890 micrograms (mcg) of beta-carotene, 260 mg potassium, 26 mg Vitamin C, 150 mcg folic acid, 2 mg vitamin E, and 68 mg calcium more than the same-size serving of iceberg lettuce.
6. Healthy Eating Tip No. 6: Drink unsweetened tea instead of sweetened tea or soda. A serving of bottled or canned sweetened tea, sweetened tea from a restaurant, or soda has about 140 calories and 32 grams of sugar per 12-ounce serving.
7. Healthy Eating Tip No. 7: Order broiled or grilled fish instead of steak when dining out. Eating fish a couple times a week will pump heart-healthy fish omega-3s into your diet.
8. Healthy Eating Tip No. 8: Have pasta with tomato-based sauce instead of white sauce. Butter or cream-based white pasta sauce (like Alfredo) is loaded with saturated fat and calories.
9. Healthy Eating Tip No. 9: Order your sandwich or entrée with fruit or fresh veggies instead of fries or chips. French fries or potato chips typically come with many of our favorite restaurant entrees.
10. Healthy Eating Tip No. 10: Order coffee drinks with skim milk – and skip the whip. Many people treat themselves to a daily frothy coffee drink in the fall and winter, and when the days turn warmer, they trade in their lattes in for an iced or blended coffee drinks.

A 12Step Program to Eating Healthier Than Ever Before

25 Simple Tips to Make Your Diet Healthier

Estimated Reading Time: 6 mins
1. Slow down. Share on Pinterest. Photography by Aya Brackett. The pace at which you eat influences how much you eat, as well as how likely you are to gain weight.
2. Choose whole grain bread instead of refined. You can easily make your diet a bit healthier by choosing whole grain bread in place of traditional refined grain bread.
3. Add Greek yogurt to your diet. Greek yogurt (or Greek-style yogurt) is thicker and creamier than regular yogurt. It has been strained to remove its excess whey, which is the watery part of milk.
4. Don’t shop without a list. There are two important strategies to employ when you go grocery shopping: Make your shopping list ahead of time and don’t go to the store hungry.
5. Eat eggs, preferably for breakfast. Eggs are incredibly healthy, especially if you eat them in the morning. They are rich in high quality protein and many essential nutrients that people often don’t get enough of, such as choline (13).
6. Increase your protein intake. Protein is often referred to as the king of nutrients, and it does seem to have some superpowers. Due to its ability to affect your hunger and satiety hormones, it’s often considered the most filling of the macronutrients (12).
7. Drink enough water. Drinking enough water is important for your health. Many studies have shown that drinking water can increase weight loss and promote weight maintenance, and it may even slightly increase the number of calories you burn each day (22, 23, 24).
8. Bake or roast instead of grilling or frying. The way you prepare your food can drastically change its effects on your health. Grilling, broiling, frying, and deep-frying are all popular methods of preparing meat and fish.
9. Take omega-3 and vitamin D supplements. Approximately 1 billion people around the globe are deficient in vitamin D (39). Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that’s very important for bone health and the proper functioning of your immune system.
10. Replace your favorite fast food restaurant. Eating out doesn’t have to involve unhealthy foods. Consider upgrading your favorite fast food restaurant to one with healthier options.

12 steps to a healthy pregnancy BabyCenter

1. Get early prenatal care. Good prenatal care is essential for you and your baby. Call your healthcare provider right away and schedule your first prenatal visit.
2. Watch what you eat. Now that you're eating for two, you may be surprised to learn that you only need about 300 additional calories per day. Make sure you get plenty of protein.
3. Take prenatal vitamins. Most prenatal supplements contain more folic acid and iron than you'll find in a standard multivitamin. It's important to get enough folic acid before conception and during early pregnancy.
4. Exercise regularly. A good exercise program can give you the strength and endurance you'll need to carry the weight you gain during pregnancy, help prevent or ease aches and pains, improve sluggish circulation in your legs, and help you handle the physical stress of labor.
5. Get some rest. The fatigue you feel in the first and third trimesters is your body's way of telling you to slow down. So listen up and take it easy as much as you can.
6. Just say no to alcohol. Don't drink while you're pregnant: Any alcohol you drink reaches your baby rapidly through your bloodstream, crossing the placenta, and your baby can end up with higher levels of blood alcohol than you have.
7. Swear off all illicit drugs. Any drug you use gets into your baby's bloodstream as well. Some studies suggest that marijuana may restrict your baby's growth and cause withdrawal symptoms (like tremors) in your newborn.
8. Stop smoking. Smoking increases the risk of miscarriage, growth problems, placental abruption, and premature delivery. Some research has even linked smoking to an increased risk of having a baby with a cleft lip or palate.
9. Cut back on caffeine. The March of Dimes advises women to limit their caffeine consumption intake to less than 200 mg per day, an amount you could get from one 8-ounce cup of strong coffee.
10. Eliminate environmental dangers. Some jobs can be hazardous to you and your developing baby. If you're routinely exposed to chemicals, heavy metals (like lead or mercury), certain biologic agents, or radiation, you'll need to make some changes as soon as possible.

6 Steps to Changing Bad Eating Habits WebMD

1. Take Baby Steps. Making small changes in your diet and lifestyle can improve your health as well as trim your waistline. Some suggestions from the experts
2. Become More Mindful. One of the first steps toward conquering bad eating habits is paying more attention to what you're eating and drinking. "Read food labels, become familiar with lists of ingredients, and start to take notice of everything you put into your mouth," says Gans.
3. Make a Plan; Be Specific. How are you going to start eating more fruit, having breakfast every day, or getting to the gym more often? Spell out your options.
4. Tackle a New Mini-Goal Each Week. These mini-steps will eventually add up to major change. For example, if your goal is to eat more vegetables, tell yourself you'll try one new veggie each week until you find some you really enjoy.
5. Be Realistic. Don't expect too much from yourself too soon. It takes about a month for any new action to become habit. Slow and steady wins the race -- along with a dose of vigilance.
6. Practice Stress Management. "Focus on dealing with stress through exercise, relaxation, meditation, or whatever works for you, so you don't fall back into those bad habits during periods of stress or use food to help you cope with the situation," advises Foreyt.
