8 Tips for a Healthy Spine Back Pain Everyday Health

1. Lift right. It's very easy to twist the wrong way and damage your spine if you don't use proper form when lifting an object. Here's how to lift correctly, according to NINDS: Stand as close to the object as you can, and use your legs and knees rather than your back or upper body to pull up the item.
2. Sleep tight. Sleeping well is important to your overall health, says Anne Coffey, DC, a chiropractor with Lustig Healing Arts in Lodi, New Jersey. Your body needs a good night's sleep to repair itself, she says.
3. Stretch out. "I never go a day without reminding people that they need to stretch to help their back and neck," Coffey says. "Keeping flexible helps maintain normal joint function and a good range of motion.
4. Stay active. You're at an increased risk of experiencing low back pain if you're not active or physically fit, according to NINDS. "Whether you make regular visits to the gym, walk, bike, swim, or play with your kids, staying active and keeping your body moving helps maintain a healthy spine," Coffey says.
5. Maintain a healthy weight. Exercise, along with a healthy diet, also helps you lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese, or quickly gaining a significant amount of weight, are risk factors for low back pain — excess weight, especially if you have belly fat, can put added stress on the muscles, ligaments, and tendons in your lower back.
6. Stay hydrated. "Staying hydrated is important to maintaining soft tissue elasticity and fluidity in joints," Coffey says. "Our intervertebral (spinal) disks are vulnerable to loss of hydration and can begin to lose height."
7. Work smart. Proper ergonomics can help reduce a lot of stress on both the lower and upper back, which in return, reduces the frequency of conditions ranging from stiff back and headaches to carpal tunnel and sciatica, Coffey says.
8. Pay attention to any warning signs. "Don't ignore spinal problems or pain," Coffey says. Although it’s common to have back pain once in a while, it can indicate a more serious problem.

7 Tips to Protect Your Lower Back Spinehealth

1. Strengthen your core muscles daily. Strong and supportive muscles throughout the trunk of your body are essential to support your spine. Core-building exercises include
2. Invest in an ergonomic office chair. Slouching forward while working at a desk places excessive pressure on the discs in your lower back and can cause problems, such as disc degeneration to occur or further deteriorate.
3. Safeguard your back while lifting. Lifting is a common cause of lower back pain. Common everyday activities, such as unloading grocery bags from the car or lifting your young child, can lead to lower back problems.
4. Dissipate stressors during everyday activities. Even small amounts of stressing on the intricate structures in your lower back can add up and lead to degeneration and pain over time.
5. Rest your back after prolonged bending. When you bend forward for a long time, such as while weeding your garden, certain changes take place in your discs and ligaments.
6. Protect your discs immediately after waking. The pressure within your discs rises up to 240% when you sleep at night (for a minimum of 7 hours).6 At this time, your discs are fully hydrated and are typically at a higher risk of herniation when subject to bending or lifting forces.56.
7. Stretch your hamstrings. A little-known cause of low back pain is tight hamstrings. Simple hamstring stretching exercises can help decrease the pressure on your pelvis and provide relief across your low back.

Improve Your Back Health Today: 9 (Simple) Steps

Just Now

1. Improve your posture to reduce neck pain and back fatigue. On average, we spend two to four hours a day on our phones; thus leading to longer-term problems, and lifelong bad posture.
2. Change your position frequently and introduce regular stretching at your desk. Repetitive activities, like sitting at a computer all day or lifting, may produce tension in the muscles, resulting in a backache.
3. Incorporate regular and low impact exercise to your routine. We all know that regular exercise is good for your health, but few people realize the positive effects exercise can have on back pain.
4. Evaluate your dietary choices and make changes where necessary. In late 2015, chiropractor Todd Sinett, author of “3 Weeks to A Better Back” was featured on Fox News and a number of other media outlets.
5. Choose footwear that supports good posture during the day and is designed for your chosen exercise. It should come as no surprise that footwear has an impact on your spinal alignment, and consequently, your back health.
6. Pay attention when lifting items and adapt your stance to protect the back. Lifting items is a commonplace task for most people and an incorrect stance – especially when lifting heavy items – can lead to injuries or problems for the back.
7. Make sure your workstation is optimized for you. Because most of us spend eight hours a day, on average, sitting at the computer, it’s important that your desk space is optimized for your body.
8. Check that your sleeping positions and mattress support the back. We spend a third of our lives sleeping, and because of this, we should not neglect the impact of sleeping positions or mattresses on back health.
9. Quit smoking to encourage better back health – and the rest of your body will thank you. A Northwestern Medicine study discovered a link between smoking and chronic back pain.
