1. A recipe for better heart health. A heart-healthy eating plan can help you manage your blood cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.
2. Reduce saturated fat in meat and poultry. The American Heart Association recommends a diet that emphasizes fish and poultry and limits red meat. The amount of saturated fat in meats can vary widely, depending on the cut and how it’s prepared.
3. Eat more fish. Fish can be fatty or lean, but it’s still low in saturated fat. Eat at least 8 ounces of non-fried fish each week. Choose oily fish such as salmon, trout and herring, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids.
4. Eat less meat. Try meatless meals featuring vegetables or beans. For example, think eggplant lasagna, or instead of a burger, consider a big grilled portobello mushroom on a bun.
5. Cook fresh vegetables the heart-healthy way. Try cooking vegetables in a tiny bit of vegetable oil and add a little water during cooking, if needed. (Or use a vegetable oil spray.)
6. Use liquid vegetable oils in place of solid fats. Liquid vegetable oils such as canola, safflower, sunflower, soybean and olive oil can often be used instead of solid fats, such as butter, lard or shortening.
7. Puree fruits and veggies for baking. Pureed fruits or vegetables can be used in place of oil in muffin, cookie, cake and snack bar recipes to give your treats an extra healthy boost.
8. Lower dairy fats. Low-fat (1%) or fat-free (skim) milk can be used in many recipes in place of whole milk or half-and-half. (Some dishes, such as puddings, may result in a softer set.)
9. Sauces and gravies. Let your cooking liquid cool, then remove the hardened fat before making gravy. Or use a fat separator to pour off the good liquid from cooking stock, leaving the fat behind.
10. Increase fiber and whole grains. Consider these heart-smart choices: Toast and crush (or cube) fiber-rich whole-grain bread to make breadcrumbs, stuffing or croutons.

1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. While the oven preheats, in a shallow dish stir together 4 cups room temperature water and 3 tablespoons kosher salt until it dissolves. Place the salmon in the water and wait for 15 minutes (this should be about the time it takes to preheat).
3. Rub the bottom of a baking dish with olive oil. Pat each piece of salmon dry and place it on the pan. Sprinkle the salmon with 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt for each of the 4 fillets and fresh ground pepper. Cover pan with foil and bake the salmon for 10 minutes. Then remove the foil bake again for 3 to 6 minutes, depending on thickness, until just tender and pink at the center (the internal temperature should be between 125 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit in the center). A 1-inch thick fillet should cook in about 15 minutes total.
4. When the salmon is done, spoon the pesto over the salmon. Sprinkle it with chopped pine nuts and if desired, a bit of lemon zest. Serve immediately. (Leftovers can be stored refrigerated for 3 to 4 days.)

1. Slow Cooker Chicken Curry. This recipe can be found in the Sisterhood’s Ultimate Recipe Bundle on page 60.
2. Slow Cooker Beef Chili. The recipe I use is no longer available online – I’m so sad! But this one is very similar, just omit the sugar.
3. Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos. Some weeks we use the chicken for tacos, some weeks we make taco bowls using cauliflower rice – the kids love them and it makes great leftovers!
4. Turkey Taco Bowls. Super easy: ground turkey with homemade taco seasoning + black beans and topped with lettuce, tomato, cilantro, and avocado.
5. Sausage + Veggies. This varies based on what we have on hand – but generally includes chicken sausage (like these from Costco) and roasted veggies (my favorite combo is sweet potatoes and broccoli).
6. Turkey or Grass-Fed Beef Burgers. We have burgers almost weekly! My husband and daughter eat theirs with a bun. My son and I eat it with a fork (dairy free/gluten free).
7. Breakfast For Dinner. This one has been out of rotation lately because I’ve been eating eggs for breakfast – but it’s so easy and so healthy! When we do breakfast for dinner I make a big egg scramble with spinach, tomatoes, peppers, and a sprinkle of goat cheese.
8. Grilled Salmon & Veggies. Salmon (my favorite recipe for salmon is in the Tighten & Tone meal plan) served with grilled veggies and quinoa.
9. Chopped Chicken Salad. This is a go-to during the hot summer months. I shared the recipe on Instagram recently, but in a nutshell it includes: chopped romaine, rotisserie chicken, garbanzo beans, cherry tomatoes, sweet peppers, and chopped egg.
10. Roasted Veggie Bowls. I love this recipe because it’s easy and healthy and you can use whatever veggies you have on hand. You can also change up the flavor by changing the sauce/dressing.
