What’s Going On in Your Bone Marrow?

12.29.2354 hours ago

1. Bone Marrow is a DNA factory of new cells that bring health to your body. Bone marrow is a soft fatty tissue found inside the central spongy part of bones throughout the skeleton. The body’s primary producer of blood cells, bone marrow also produces stem cells, and a LOT of them. Thetwo main types of marrow are red bone marrow, known as myeloid tissue, and yellow bone marrow, known as fatty tissue. Both red and yellow bone marrow are enriched with blood vessels and capillaries. Stem Cell Production Bone-marrow is the primary location in the human body that produces stem cells. We begin life with between 6 and 7 trillion stem cells. At any given time there are an estimated 100 trillion stem cells in an adult human body. These potent “blank” cells are undifferentiated and are the very foundation for every organ, cell, and tissue in the human body. A Stem cell is essentially a type of “seed” or “starter” or “blank source” cell that has the unique ability to transform or differentiate i...

What 10 Things To Avoid For Bone Health Wellsprings

1. Having too much salt. The more salt you eat, the more calcium your body gets rid of, which means it’s not there to help your bones. Foods like breads, cheeses, crisps, and processed meats have some of the highest counts.
2. Binge watching hurts your bones. It’s fine to enjoy your favourite shows, but it’s too easy to spend endless hours in front a screen, nestled on your couch.
3. Bike rides don’t help bones. When you pedal for hours your heart and lungs get stronger. Your bones? Not so much because it’s not a weight-bearing activity, bike riding does not increase your bone density, unlike walks, runs, and hikes.
4. Staying indoors too much. The body makes vitamin D in sunlight and just 10-15 minutes several times a week could do it and you will benefit in other ways just from being out of the house.
5. Another round of drinks. When you’re out with friends, one more round might sound like fun. but to keep bone loss in check, you should limit the amount of alcohol you drink.
6. Soft drinks can be a problem. Too many cola-flavored drinks could harm your bones. While more research is needed, some studies have linked bone loss with both the caffeine and the phosphorous in these drinks.
7. Wheat bran and calcium. What sounds healthier than 100% wheat bran? But when you eat it with milk, your body absorbs less calcium so may be time for a change?
8. Smoking. When you regularly inhale cigarette smoke, your body can’t form new healthy bone tissue as easily. The longer you smoke, the worse it gets. Smokers have a greater chance of bone breaks and take longer to heal.
9. Check your prescription. Some medications, especially if you have to take them for a long time, can have a negative impact on your bones. Some anti-seizure drugs and glucocorticoids, like prednisone and cortisone, can cause bone loss.
10. Being underweight. Not usually a problem at menopause, but a low body weight, a BMI of 18.5 or less, means a greater chance of fracture and bone loss.

8 Things You Should Know About Donating Bone Marrow Before

1. If You're A Match, You'll Be Asked To Do More Tests. Matching as a donor means that you'll be invited in to a series of further tests to determine eligibility.
2. Age Matters, And So Does Race. According to Be The Match, 85 percent of all donations of bone marrow come from people between the ages of 18 and 44, so it's important to register while you're young if you're inclined to do so.
3. You Don't Necessarily Donate Immediately After You're Matched. The rigor of the donation process continues once you are declared a match. You'll be scheduled to donate at the right time for the patient, which depends on their treatment and how their condition is progressing.
4. You Can Donate In Two Ways. You might have thought bone marrow donation was one thing, but there are actually two ways to donate the stem cells a patient needs, and the doctors involved will decide which one is best.
5. Recovery Is Pretty Quick. Contrary to popular belief, recovery is pretty quick. For surgical bone marrow donors, there may be a few side effects, but these are all supposed to pass off within about a week, and all symptoms are generally gone within 30 days.
6. You Could Meet The Person You Helped. Meeting up with a patient isn't immediate if you've donated to them; laws differ from state to state, but in most there's a one year minimum period after the surgery where you can communicate (sending cards and so on), but have to remain anonymous and not meet.
7. Or You Could Help Someone In Your Own Family. 30 percent of people who need donations actually find one within their own families, according to Mixed Marrow.
8. Registering to be a bone marrow donor might seem scary, but odds are that you won't need to be a match at all — and if you are, a little logistical complication and a few hours out of your day aren't much to pay for saving somebody else's life.

Erythropoietin is the hormone produced in the kidneys which stimulates red cell production in the bone marrow.

What vitamins are in bone marrow?
