Bronze, Silver, or Gold? A Guide to Choosing your Health

1. The first thing to consider is if you want an HMO or PPO plan. A Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) provides health services to you through a network of healthcare professionals. In this type of plan, you usually are unable to use providers outside of the network and sometimes you need a referral from your primary care doctor in order to see a specialist. On the other hand, Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) allows you to receive health services outside of your network of professionals, which is less restrictive than an HMO, and also more expensive. If it is very important to you to be able to use a specialist outside of your network, you may want to pay extra for a PPO. Otherwise, an HMO will save you money. If you have a specific primary care doctor that you want to use just make sure that they accept whichever plan you choose, HMO or PPO.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is bronze more expensive than silver?

Bronze plans are often the cheapest from a monthly payment perspective. They feature low monthly payments, but high costs out-of-pocket. Silver plans will have higher monthly costs than Bronze plans, but these payments will be lower than Gold plans.

What is the metal level for health insurance?

Under Obamacare, health insurance plans have a metallic level that indicates the level of coverage. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA or “Obamacare”), each health insurance plan is assigned a metallic level. The bronze, silver, gold, and platinum benefit levels actually refer to a plan’s actuarial value (AV) level.

Is bronze or silver more expensive?

Silver is about $16.61 per troy ounce. Bronze is about $1.85 per pound, which is the equivalent to about $0.1267 per troy ounce. Thus, gold is about 81 times more valuable than silver, and 10,588 times more valuable than brass. Bear in mind, these relationships do change, because of markets. The basic relationships are fairly consistent, though.

What is a bronze level health plan?

A bronze health plan is a type of health insurance that pays, on average, 60 percent of average enrollees' health care expenses (but this is an average across a standard population—the percentage of your costs that the plan covers will vary tremendously depending on whether you need a lot of medical care during...
