Aging: What to expect Mayo Clinic

1. Your cardiovascular system. The most common change in the cardiovascular system is stiffening of the blood vessels and arteries, causing your heart to work harder to pump blood through them.
2. Your bones, joints and muscles. With age, bones tend to shrink in size and density, weakening them and making them more susceptible to fracture.
3. Your digestive system. Age-related structural changes in the large intestine can result in more constipation in older adults. Other contributing factors include a lack of exercise, not drinking enough fluids and a low-fiber diet.
4. Your bladder and urinary tract. Your bladder may become less elastic as you age, resulting in the need to urinate more often. Weakening of bladder muscles and pelvic floor muscles may make it difficult for you to empty your bladder completely or cause you to lose bladder control (urinary incontinence).
5. Your memory and thinking skills. Your brain undergoes changes as you age that may have minor effects on your memory or thinking skills. For example, healthy older adults might forget familiar names or words, or they may find it more difficult to multitask.
6. Your eyes and ears. With age, you might have difficulty focusing on objects that are close up. You might become more sensitive to glare and have trouble adapting to different levels of light.
7. Your teeth. Your gums might pull back from your teeth. Certain medications, such as those that treat allergies, asthma, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, also can cause dry mouth.
8. Your skin. With age, your skin thins and becomes less elastic and more fragile, and fatty tissue just below the skin decreases. You might notice that you bruise more easily.
9. Your weight. How your body burns calories (metabolism) slows down as you age. If you decrease activities as you age, but continue to eat the same as usual, you'll gain weight.
10. Your sexuality. With age, sexual needs and performance might change. Illness or medication might affect your ability to enjoy sex. For women, vaginal dryness can make sex uncomfortable.

10 common elderly health issues Vital Record

1. Chronic health conditions. According to the National Council on Aging, about 92 percent of seniors have at least one chronic disease and 77 percent have at least two.
2. Cognitive health. Cognitive health is focused on a person’s ability to think, learn and remember. The most common cognitive health issue facing the elderly is dementia, the loss of those cognitive functions.
3. Mental health. According to the World Health Organization, over 15 percent of adults over the age of 60 suffer from a mental disorder. A common mental disorder among seniors is depression, occurring in seven percent of the elderly population.
4. Physical injury. Every 15 seconds, an older adult is admitted to the emergency room for a fall. A senior dies from falling every 29 minutes, making it the leading cause of injury among the elderly.
5. HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. In 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that 21 percent of AIDS cases occurred in seniors over the age of 50 in the United States, and 37 percent of deaths that same year were people over the age of 55.
6. Malnutrition. Malnutrition in older adults over the age of 65 is often underdiagnosed and can lead to other elderly health issues, such as a weakened immune system and muscle weakness.
7. Sensory impairments. Sensory impairments, such as vision and hearing, are extremely common for older Americans over the age of 70. According to the CDC, one out of six older adults has a visual impairment and one out of four has a hearing impairment.
8. Oral health. Often overlooked, oral health is one of the most important issues for the elderly. The CDC’s Division of Oral Health found that about 25 percent of adults over the age of 65 no longer have their natural teeth.
9. Substance abuse. Substance abuse, typically alcohol or drug-related, is more prevalent among seniors than realized. According to the National Council on Aging, the number of older adults with substance abuse problems is expected to double to five million by 2020.
10. Bladder control and constipation. Incontinence and constipation are both common with aging, and can impact older adults quality of life. In addition to age-related changes, these may be a side effect of previous issues mentioned above, such as not eating a well-balanced diet and suffering from chronic health conditions.

13 Easy Ways for Improving Elderly Nutrition and Health

1. Eat a Diverse Diet of Nutrient-Rich Foods. According to most senior nutrition guidelines, the easiest way to get all the necessary nutrients in your body is to have a highly diversified diet containing complex and nonrefined carbohydrates, lean proteins, low-fat dairy products, and foods low in saturated and high in unsaturated fats.
2. Choose Healthier Snacks. Avoid processed foods as much as possible. They are usually high in salt or sugar and unhealthy food additives. Instead, choose natural products such as fruits and nuts as snacks in between meals.
3. Fiber. The next smart choice for older adults is to eat plenty of fiber. It’s essential for a healthy digestive system. Apart from preventing constipation—a common problem in the elderly—fiber is also important for maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.
4. Omega-3 Fatty Acids. The primary source of this staple of healthy eating for the elderly is fish, especially sardines, tuna, mackerel, and salmon. They’re also contained in flaxseed, soybeans, canola oil, and walnuts.
5. Calcium. Calcium is a mineral essential for bone health. The WHO recommends people over the age of 50 consume 1200 mg of calcium daily. This mineral is especially important for women after menopause because they are particularly prone to developing osteoporosis.
6. Vitamin D. The second most important nutrient in preventing osteoporosis is vitamin D. Unlike most other vitamins, our body is able to produce it itself.
7. Vitamin C. Vitamin C is an essential antioxidant that helps us recover after infections, repair bones, heal wounds, help with the collagen production that keeps our skin elastic, and even help prevent cancer and heart disease.
8. Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 helps maintain nerve function, as well as the production of red blood cells and DNA. As you age, this vitamin gets increasingly difficult to absorb from food.
9. Iron. Eating foods rich in iron, such as meat, prevents the elderly from becoming anemic and feeling tired and lethargic. Iron is a vital part of hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells, which carries oxygen throughout our bodies.
10. Potassium. The advantages of eating foods high in potassium—such as bananas, prunes, and potatoes—include reducing blood pressure and lowering your chances of developing kidney stones.
