7 Essential Elements of Healthcare Excellence

1. Rapid Access/Open Access. As more and more people access our healthcare and behavioral health systems, naturally we want to make sure that there is easy, fast, open access to services at all hours of the day.
2. Comprehensive Whole-Person/Whole Family Care. Whether you work in an acute care hospital, a behavioral health hospital, outpatient services, or anywhere, it’s likely you're part of the forward momentum in health care, where you no longer treat just one aspect of a person.
3. Culture of Resiliency and Recovery. Let’s face it: most situations of noncompliance, hostile behavior, and even some assaultive behavior often stem from a situation where the individual feels powerless and is attempting to gain some control over their situation.
4. Outcomes-Based Care. We can only change what we measure. We should all be focused on outcomes. In terms of workplace violence prevention... Is your organization improving practices as they relate to reducing the use of restraint and seclusion?
5. High-Value Services. It’s much easier to focus on high-quality patient care when you don’t have to worry so much about how to manage and negotiate the tricky waters of workplace violence.
6. World-Class Customer Service. De-escalation strategies are all about customer service. The more staff are equipped to recognize the different levels of escalation and to professionally and appropriately respond with a focus on collaboration and cooperation as much as possible, the higher the level of patient satisfaction.
7. Staff Engagement and Wellness. People enter the caring profession because they want to give back; because they want to be a part of something bigger than themselves; because they feel called to do so.

5 key elements of an effective CDS system Healthcare News

1. Point-of-care access. Physicians need access to the Smart Form in the EHR's notes section at the point-of-care. The form displays patient-specific health history and allows the physician to document observations and information both in preexisting and free text forms.
2. Automatic recommendations on care needs. Based on the information in the EHR and established clinical guidelines, the system should automatically present tests and treatments for the physician to consider.
3. Identify and address care and documentation gaps. If a patient misses an appointment or has not received recommended care, the system should prompt the physician to address the shortcomings.
4. Patient review. The Smart Form should provide a recap at the end of each visit, outlining the patient's health status, care given and next steps. After reviewing the information together, patients and physicians can determine future care needs and treatment options.
5. Patient education and materials. If education materials are required, the physician should be able to print all documents right then and there. Additionally, the same accessibility should be applied to any needed laboratory order forms or new prescriptions.

A Framework for a Systems Approach to Health Care Delivery

In this model, adapted from Ferlie and Shortell (2001), the health care system is divided into four “nested” levels: (1) the individual patient; (2) the care team, which includes professional care providers (e.g., clinicians, pharmacists, and others), the patient, and family members; (3) the organization (e.g., hospital, …

1. External forces of history, financial constraints, political landscape, current socioeconomic structure and consumer preferences shape the structure, or lack thereof, of the American health care system—often through health policy decisions about funding care, reimbursement, and regulation. Direct effects can be seen in the organization and delivery of care. A focus of our class will be the downstream effects on access, quality, cost, equity, and population health. These five elements of health care are the pillars of this course. The US has the trifecta of high cost, unequal access, and often below average outcomes compared to other highly developed nations. This module will provide an introduction to the American health care system (AHCS), explore some of the complexities of health care delivery, and provide a glimpse of the historical evolution of the AHCS that has led to the great debate and need for health care reform today. We will differentiate between the traditional primary...

Health Care Systems Four Basic Models Physicians for a

1. The Beveridge Model. Named after William Beveridge, the daring social reformer who designed Britain’s National Health Service. In this system, health care is provided and financed by the government through tax payments, just like the police force or the public library.
2. The Bismarck Model. Named for the Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, who invented the welfare state as part of the unification of Germany in the 19th century.
3. The National Health Insurance Model. This system has elements of both Beveridge and Bismarck. It uses private-sector providers, but payment comes from a government-run insurance program that every citizen pays into.
4. The Out-of-Pocket Model. Only the developed, industrialized countries — perhaps 40 of the world’s 200 countries — have established health care systems. Most of the nations on the planet are too poor and too disorganized to provide any kind of mass medical care.

4 Elements of Successful Health Information Technology

1. Executive support. Unwavering support and sponsorship from the health care system’s executive leadership is critical. Initial adoption and ongoing optimization of health IT requires changes in organizational culture.
2. Clinical leadership. Someone once told me that the medical staff is the only legal entity in the United States where a vote of 99 to 1 is called a tie.
3. Communication with hospital staff. “I’m not sure if this is true, but I heard...” That phrase is perhaps the most dangerous. It starts wildfire rumors that overtake hospital staff before new technology is even in place.
4. Health IT governance. A sound governance structure is necessary to handle the myriad issues that arise in the normal course of HIT adoption and optimization.

4 key elements to a great telemedicine system

1. Collaboration tools. These are the devices that enable the hospital to connect patients with providers, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops or what Mr. Baird calls "video endpoints."
2. Medical peripherals. Peripherals are the diagnostic tools used in telemedicine, such as otoscopes, ultrasound machines or digital stethoscopes. Coupling peripheral devices with collaboration tools and workflow software enables the delivery of high definition audio, video, images and data for caregivers to provide treatment and diagnosis from multiple locations.
3. Workflow. "Workflow is the ability to have full documentation for various subspecialties and modalities," Mr. Baird says. This means in addition to the telemedicine hardware (i.e., carts, medical peripherals), hospitals also need adequate software to manage the complete process of connecting patients to medical professionals and to integrate telemedicine with their existing IT resources, like EHR systems.
4. Cloud-based services. Traditionally, telemedicine systems have run on enterprise systems, costing healthcare organizations thousands of dollars to run just one telemedicine cart, Mr. Baird says.
