5. Flavor Is Key. Wright says that many of her older patients, even her own father, struggle with their sense of taste as they age. As a result, older adults tend to eat less frequently or not at all, meaning they aren’t meeting their nutrition requirements.
6. Reading Labels. Nutrition labels are on everything these days but reading them is still a problem for many people. With ingredients too complicated to pronounce and percentages that don’t seem to add up, it can get confusing trying to discern exactly what’s in the food you’re eating.

1. Limit sugary drinks. Sugary drinks like sodas, fruit juices, and sweetened teas are the primary source of added sugar in the American diet (1). Unfortunately, findings from several studies point to sugar-sweetened beverages increasing risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, even in people who are not carrying excess body fat (2).
2. Eat nuts and seeds. Some people avoid nuts because they are high in fat. However, nuts and seeds are incredibly nutritious. They are packed with protein, fiber, and a variety of vitamins and minerals (6, 7).
3. Avoid ultra-processed foods. Ultra-processed foods are foods containing ingredients that are significantly modified from their original form. They often contain additives like added sugar, highly refined oil, salt, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colors, and flavors as well (10).
4. Don’t fear coffee. Despite some controversy over it, coffee is loaded with health benefits. It’s rich in antioxidants, and some studies have linked coffee intake to longevity and a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, and numerous other illnesses (16, 17, 18, 19).
5. Eat fatty fish. Fish is a great source of high-quality protein and healthy fat. This is particularly true of fatty fish, such as salmon, which is loaded with anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and various other nutrients (20, 21).
6. Get enough sleep. The importance of getting enough quality sleep cannot be overstated. Poor sleep can drive insulin resistance, can disrupt your appetite hormones, and reduce your physical and mental performance (25, 26, 27).

6. Not all calories are equal. A happy meal from McDonalds that has 500 calories, is not the same calories as a 500 calorie meal containing baked boneless skinless chicken breast, brown rice, and mixed broccoli and cauliflower.
7. Eat vegetables with a fat. Whether it’s a salad, a sandwich, or a free plate of foods, try to pair a healthy fat with your vegetables. The fat will help the body better absorb the nutrients from the vegetables!
8. Exercise improves your mental health. Exercise releases endorphins that make you happier and helps relieve your stress. Think of your sweat pouring out the toxic ick in your body making your mind feel sad or stressed.

1. Why did you change the Nutrition Facts label? The previous label was more than 20 years old when the changes were made. Packages and containers of these products are not required to include a declaration of the number of grams of Added Sugars in a serving of the product but must still include a declaration of the percent Daily Value for Added Sugars.
6. What about certain cranberry products that have sugars added for palatability? The number of grams of Added Sugars in a serving of a cranberry product, as well as the percent Daily Value for Added Sugars, must still be labeled.
