Urgent health challenges for the next decade

Urgent Who.int Get All

1. Elevating health in the climate debate. The climate crisis is a health crisis. Air pollution kills an estimated 7 million people every year, while climate change causes more extreme weather events, exacerbates malnutrition and fuels the spread of infectious diseases such as malaria.
2. Delivering health in conflict and crisis. In 2019, most disease outbreaks requiring the highest level of WHO response occurred in countries with protracted conflict.
3. Making health care fairer. Persistent and growing socio-economic gaps result in major discrepancies in the quality of people’s health.
4. Expanding access to medicines. About one-third of the world’s people lack access to medicines, vaccines, diagnostic tools and other essential health products.
5. Stopping infectious diseases. Infectious diseases like HIV, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, malaria, neglected tropical diseases and sexually-transmitted infections will kill an estimated 4 million people in 2020, most of them poor.
6. Preparing for epidemics. Every year, the world spends far more responding to disease outbreaks, natural disasters and other health emergencies than it does preparing for and preventing them.
7. Protecting people from dangerous products. Lack of food, unsafe food and unhealthy diets are responsible for almost one-third of today’s global disease burden.
8. Investing in the people who defend our health. Chronic under-investment in the education and employment of health workers, coupled with a failure to ensure decent pay, has led to health worker shortages all over the world.
9. Keeping adolescents safe. More than 1 million adolescents aged 10-19 years die every year. The leading causes of death in this age group are road injury, HIV, suicide, lower respiratory infections, and interpersonal violence.
10. Earning public trust. Trust helps to shape whether patients are likely to rely on health services and follow a health worker’s advice - around vaccinations, taking medicines, or using condoms.

1. Focusing on health when discussing climate change. The climate crisis not only impacts the environment directly, but it also poses many health risks to people all over the world.
2. Providing health care to nations in crisis. Outbreaks of diseases are very difficult to treat or contain in countries experiencing conflict or crisis.
3. Making health care accessible to everyone. Health care should be accessible to people of all socio-economic backgrounds. As it stands, there is an 18-year discrepancy in life expectancy between people living in rich and poor nations.
4. Expanding access to vaccines and medicine. Nearly one-third of the world’s population doesn’t have access to quality medicine and vaccines, which puts millions of lives in danger.
5. Fighting communicable diseases. Communicable diseases are estimated to kill around 4 million people this year alone, over 28 times the amount of those who died due to vaccine-preventable diseases in 2019.
6. Preparing for epidemics. When it comes to disease outbreaks or epidemics, it is important to stay ahead of the curve, especially when millions of lives are potentially at risk.
7. Making healthy food more accessible. As food insecurity continues to afflict millions, especially in war-torn regions, many are left with either unsafe or unhealthy food options, which directly causes a third of all diseases worldwide.
8. Investing in health care workers. Health workers around the world are often overworked and underpaid, which has led to a worldwide shortage of health care professionals, placing both health care systems and people at risk.
9. Promoting adolescent safety. Nearly 1 million teenagers die from violence, HIV/AIDS, and suicide every year. Providing educators and health care professionals with the necessary tools to educate teenagers about sex, drug use, and mental health can help significantly reduce this number.
10. Strengthening trust between health care systems and the public. Misinformation around medicines and vaccines can be detrimental to public health on a global scale.

The Top Global Risks of 2021 Time

The Time.com Get All

Estimated Reading Time: 9 mins
Published: Jan 06, 2021
1. 46* Following a 2016 Trump victory that many Democrats believe Russia helped him win, Joe Biden’s term opens the era of the asterisk presidency, a time when the Oval Office occupant is seen as illegitimate by roughly one third of the country—and by some of the lawmakers that election skeptics send to Congress.
2. Long Covid. In 2021, the lingering symptoms of COVID-19 will threaten not just lives but political stability and the global economy. Countries around the world will struggle to meet ambitious vaccination timelines, and the pandemic will leave a legacy of high debt, displaced workers, growing inequality and lost trust.
3. Climate: Net Zero Meets G-Zero. Climate policy is becoming a higher national priority…and an arena of global competition. Across a range of clean technologies, China’s longstanding industrial policy approach will face an aggressive counteroffensive from Washington.
4. U.S.- China Competition Broadens. A shared desire in Washington and Beijing for stability in U.S.- China relations will ease headline tensions, but U.S. coordination of China competition together with allies, along with vaccine diplomacy/nationalism and dueling climate tech strategies will combine with longstanding frictions in other areas to further complicate their rivalry.
5. Global Data Reckoning. A slowdown to the free flow of sensitive data across borders will raise costs for companies and disrupt popular apps and internet business models.
6. Cyber Tipping Point. There’s no single factor that raises the risk of a major disaster in cyberspace in 2021. The digital realm, where any computer or smartphone can become an entry point for hackers, and nation states and criminals act with relative impunity, is too unpredictable for that.
7. (Out in the) Cold Turkey. Economic setbacks in 2021 and Turkey’s poor COVID-19 response will leave President Erdogan struggling to win back voters disillusioned with his two-decade rule.
8. Middle East – Low Oil Takes a Toll. The Middle East is the biggest regional loser from coronavirus. Energy-producing countries in the Middle East and North Africa faced a collapse in global energy demand in 2020 that left governments from Algeria to Iran with less cash flowing into their coffers—even as the pandemic sickened citizens and weakened economies.
9. Europe After Merkel. Angela Merkel’s departure later this year after 15 years as Chancellor will drive the continent’s top risk. Europe faces an economic hangover from intensified lockdown restrictions in several countries, and Merkel won’t be there to encourage flexibility in the multilateral response.
10. Latin America Disappoints. After the Middle East, Latin America is the region of the world most negatively impacted by coronavirus. Governments in Latin America face intensified versions of the formidable political, social, and economic problems they were confronting before the pandemic.

1. Global health is the understanding of health care in an international and interdisciplinary context. It includes the study, research, and practice of medicine with a focus on improving health and health care equity for populations worldwide. Global health initiatives take into account both medical and non-medical disciplines, such as epidemiology, sociology, economic disparities, public policy, environmental factors, cultural studies, etc. One of the most prominent agencies focused on advancing global health is the World Health Organization (WHO), but this agency is not alone. Researchers and leaders in a variety of fields are spearheading initiatives that form alliances between historically disassociated fields. Dr. Calum Macpherson, vice provost for international program development at St. George's University, describes the The One Health One Medicine Initiative as the convergence of human, animal, and ecosystem health. “Each of these practices are inextricably connected,” Macpher...

4 of the Most Pressing Global Health Issues We Face Today

the Northeastern.edu Get All

1. While, in recent years, the global community has achieved marked successes in areas designated as high-priority, such as HIV/AIDS and malaria, other areas have remained neglected. This has produced stark inequalities in care. For example, in many communities across the global south, those suffering from HIV/AIDS can now access state-of-the-art care, while those suffering from cancer lack access to the most basic services. These dynamics reflect the limitations of top-down interventions, in which planners often use global indicators of disease prevalence and cost-benefit analyses to set priorities. By contrast, rights-based approaches to global health adopt a patient perspective, which considers the range of forces that shape health and disease. The nonprofit organization Partners in Health, for example, developed a particularly successful holistic, rights-based approach to global health in Haiti, and then used the lessons learned from that project to develop a similar initiative in...

HIV can also be transmitted from a mother to her child during pregnancy and delivery. Individuals cannot become infected through ordinary day-to-day contact such as kissing, hugging, shaking hands, or sharing personal objects, food or water. It is important to note that people with HIV who are taking ART and are virally suppressed do not transmit HIV to their sexual partners. Early access to ART and support to remain on treatment is therefore critical not only to improve the health of people with HIV but also to prevent HIV transmission.
