The best health insurance for healthy persons is a high-deductible "Bronze" tier plan, or a "catastrophic" policy that is available to persons under 30, or if you meet specific lower income guidelines. A high-deductible policy (also an HSA) will substantially reduce your rate, while still providing excellent major medical benefits.
Health insurance is important for other reasons, as well: if you do get sick or suddenly need emergency care, health insurance plans help cover some of those costs.** Otherwise you may be on your own paying the high cost for care. Is there health insurance for healthy people? Yes. If you are healthy, you may want to consider health plans with higher deductibles and lower monthly premiums.
If you buy a life insurance policy when you are still young and healthy, you will be able to lock-in lower rates that might not be around when you become old and grey. When you are still young, you are also a lot less likely to have any pre-existing health conditions that would show up on a life insurance policies health exam.
Under current law, the answer for most people is yes, you are required to have health insurance. This is known as the “individual mandate” under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or “Obamacare.” To fulfill this requirement, you must be enrolled in a plan that meets the minimum essential coverage standard.
