Data from children's charities, including Childline and the UK National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children, have shown substantial and worrying increases in demand for their support, with Childline reporting a 36% increase from 2013 to 2016 in calls from children seeking help for serious mental health issues.1. 12
The effects of mental illness have physical, social, and financial implications. Depression, outbursts of frustration, and excessive stress can lead to a weakened immune system and increased risk of heart attack and coronary disease. Mentally ill individuals often experience financial difficulties due to the inability to sustain employment.
Even before COVID-19, the prevalence of mental illness among adults was increasing. In 2017-2018, 19% of adults experienced a mental illness, an increase of 1.5 million people over last year's dataset. Suicidal ideation among adults is increasing.
A mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts a person's thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning.
