1. Talk About Your Day. This is kind of a no-brainer, but it’s still one of the best ways to get your thoughts and feelings out. That said, the way that you get your thoughts out is important in determining how effective this treatment is.
2. Identify Things You’re Grateful For. Finding opportunities to be grateful every day can be difficult for anyone, but even more so when you have a mental illness.
3. Write a List of Your Coping Mechanisms. Whether you’ve got depression, anxiety, or another mental health issue, you’ve probably developed some coping skills over the years.
4. Describe a Goal. What are you working towards? Write it out, then talk about how you’re going to reach that goal. This is a great way to not only keep you motivated but also to make sure that you’re staying on track.
5. Write About How Different You Were 5 Years Ago. You, like everyone else, are always changing. But it can be easy to forget that when you’re busy dealing with mental health issues.
6. Write a Letter to Your Body. Mental illness often changes how you view your body. Whether you want to write a love letter, some complaints, or a letter of apology, it’s important to address your body image.
7. List and Describe Your Emotions. What did you feel like today? List out every emotion that you went through and describe how it felt in that moment. This tool will help you identify the causes of your emotions and how you’re responding to them.
8. Write About How You’d Describe Yourself to a Stranger. If you were going to explain who you are to a stranger, how would that go? What are your likes, your dislikes, your strengths, or your weaknesses?
9. Describe the Best Compliment You’ve Ever Gotten. What was the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you? How did it make you feel, and how did that moment play out?
10. Write a Message for Yourself on Bad Days. Bad mental health days happen, and there isn’t much you can do to prevent them. However, you can prepare for them by writing a message to yourself.

1. Ask Questions To Get To Know Yourself Better. Self-discovery is an important part of journaling. In fact, when I journal, I do it mostly with self-discovery as the main purpose.
2. Identify Barriers To Self-Love. These types of journaling techniques for mental health can be hard to get through. But they’re also very important. It’s important to use journaling as a tool to identify these flaws, learn how to challenge them, and overcome these ways of thinking.
3. Keep To-Do Lists. I’m really into keeping to-do lists. My journal is filled with them. Lists are a great way to keep track of your goals, and to check in and monitor your progress.
4. Celebrate Your Bravery. Use your journal to keep a record of and celebrate your bravery. If you have a fear and you did something to challenge it, then write about it.
5. Record Your Gratitude. Keeping a gratitude list is an important part of living a mindful life. It’s also super easy to do. On a daily basis, write down three things you are grateful for.
6. Explore Worst Case Scenarios. Okay. I know that writing about worst case scenarios doesn’t sound like a fun exercise. But this is really one of the most helpful journaling techniques for mental health that are out there.
7. Challenge Your Ability To Mind Read/Predict The Future. Thinking that you know what other people think about you or believing that you can anticipate the outcome of an event are examples of cognitive distortions.
8. Write About Your Worries. Anxiety is really, really annoying. It can get in the way of so many things. And yet it’s a huge part of our daily lives. When anxiety gets out of control, that’s when it starts to interfere with our lives.
9. Explore Problem-Solving Solutions. Are you going through a rough time in your life where it feels like all your problems are swallowing you up? Whenever this happens to me, and I start to feel overwhelmed, that’s when I start writing out a list.
10. Visual Journaling. Journaling isn’t just about writing. If you want to get really creative with your journaling techniques for mental health, try ditching the words.
