4 journaling techniques to support your mental health

support Happiful.com Get All

Estimated Reading Time: 4 mins
1. Bullet journaling. Bullet journaling is a form of organisation that was invented by Ryder Carroll in 2013. Instead of having separate lists of things strewn around the house or on your phone, a bullet journal allows you to keep track of all this information in one notebook.
2. Junk journal. Clutter can be a major trigger for anxiety, but it can be helpfully stored away with a notebook. Find those small bits and pieces that you’re keeping stashed around your home – such as cinema tickets, receipts, photos, labels, and other mementoes – and glue or Sellotape them into a junk journal.
3. Vision book. You may have heard of vision boards, but have you ever heard of a vision book? Our dreams and desires can change throughout our lives, and sometimes we have more than one vision at one time.
4. Gratitude journal. A gratitude journal can be a great way to maintain your mental health, particularly when you’re really struggling with low mood or anxiety.

1. Clear Your Thoughts and Feelings. Do you ever feel like you are just jumbled up inside? In fact, you probably don’t even know what you feel most of the time.
2. Get To Know Yourself Better. Do you have a hard time figuring out what makes you happy and content? Well, writing down the times when you’re mentally at your best, will help you recall these certain times.
3. Help Eliminate Stress. Stress has been known throughout history to have major negative effects on the psyche. Stress has not only lead many individuals to developing serious health conditions, but it has led to heart attacks and other onsets.
4. Learn To Handle And Solve More Problems Effectively. You don’t have to be a psychology major to have heard about the left and right side of the brain.
5. Become More Empathetic to Others. There is probably nothing worse than feeling down on yourself and you often times feel this way after a disagreement with a loved one or someone close to you.
6. Be More Creative. Have you ever heard of someone keeping a dream journal? Many famous authors and writers practice this tactic from time to time. As they experience a vivid dream they immediately write about their experiences.
7. Improve Your Outlook On Life. While you’re at it, you should understand that journaling can help you improve your outlook on life. Journaling is all about reflecting on your life and your current problems.
8. Better Identify Your Problems. Pretty much everyone is going to have problems in their life. You’re no different. The good news is that you can use journaling to help identify your problems a little bit easier.
9. Become a Problem Solver. Problems in your life are going to spiral out of control if you do not deal with them. In return, this can make you feel downright terrible.
10. Overcome Anxiety. One of the most common reasons people start journaling for mental health is because they’re dealing with anxiety. If you’re suffering from anxiety, you can often get relief by speaking with someone.

1. Ask Questions To Get To Know Yourself Better. Self-discovery is an important part of journaling. In fact, when I journal, I do it mostly with self-discovery as the main purpose.
2. Identify Barriers To Self-Love. These types of journaling techniques for mental health can be hard to get through. But they’re also very important. It’s important to use journaling as a tool to identify these flaws, learn how to challenge them, and overcome these ways of thinking.
3. Keep To-Do Lists. I’m really into keeping to-do lists. My journal is filled with them. Lists are a great way to keep track of your goals, and to check in and monitor your progress.
4. Celebrate Your Bravery. Use your journal to keep a record of and celebrate your bravery. If you have a fear and you did something to challenge it, then write about it.
5. Record Your Gratitude. Keeping a gratitude list is an important part of living a mindful life. It’s also super easy to do. On a daily basis, write down three things you are grateful for.
6. Explore Worst Case Scenarios. Okay. I know that writing about worst case scenarios doesn’t sound like a fun exercise. But this is really one of the most helpful journaling techniques for mental health that are out there.
7. Challenge Your Ability To Mind Read/Predict The Future. Thinking that you know what other people think about you or believing that you can anticipate the outcome of an event are examples of cognitive distortions.
8. Write About Your Worries. Anxiety is really, really annoying. It can get in the way of so many things. And yet it’s a huge part of our daily lives. When anxiety gets out of control, that’s when it starts to interfere with our lives.
9. Explore Problem-Solving Solutions. Are you going through a rough time in your life where it feels like all your problems are swallowing you up? Whenever this happens to me, and I start to feel overwhelmed, that’s when I start writing out a list.
10. Visual Journaling. Journaling isn’t just about writing. If you want to get really creative with your journaling techniques for mental health, try ditching the words.

1. Mental Health Trackers. There are so many different kinds of trackers you can try! Think about how you would like to track your patterns, learn what triggers you and help create healthy habits.
2. Journaling Prompts For Mental Health. Journaling how you are feeling, what caused you to feel a certain way and how it is affecting you can be very therapeutic.
3. Gratitude Log. Being more aware of the good things in your life is a tool you can use to bring positivity in your life. It can be very hard to see the good when you are suffering but working hard to find one thing every day you are grateful can really help you through dark moments.
4. Rant Pages. Sometimes you just need to get it all off your chest! A safe and productive way to do that is to use your journal. Create a special area where you can write everything you are feeling without censorship.
5. Therapy Pages. If you go to therapy then creating a spread to help you process each session can help your therapy be more effective. You can jot down ideas about things you want to bring up in the next session as they come to you in between sessions.
6. Self Care. The sad truth is that most people tend to put themselves last when it comes to care. It can be so easy to care for everyone else and not take the time to look after ourselves.
7. Vision Board. Your journal can be a great tool for boosting your mood and motivation. Take the time to make a spread that inspires you. You can use images, words, goals, things you love about yourself and anything that will give you a lift when you need it.
8. Positivity Page. This spread is similar to the vision board in that it is used as a tool to boost your mood. Create a simple list of things you can do when you are feeling low.
9. Brain Dump. A brain dump is an easy way to unload all those things whizzing around your brain. You can do them as often as you need and they will help you prioritize tasks and destress.

1. Talk About Your Day. This is kind of a no-brainer, but it’s still one of the best ways to get your thoughts and feelings out. That said, the way that you get your thoughts out is important in determining how effective this treatment is.
2. Identify Things You’re Grateful For. Finding opportunities to be grateful every day can be difficult for anyone, but even more so when you have a mental illness.
3. Write a List of Your Coping Mechanisms. Whether you’ve got depression, anxiety, or another mental health issue, you’ve probably developed some coping skills over the years.
4. Describe a Goal. What are you working towards? Write it out, then talk about how you’re going to reach that goal. This is a great way to not only keep you motivated but also to make sure that you’re staying on track.
5. Write About How Different You Were 5 Years Ago. You, like everyone else, are always changing. But it can be easy to forget that when you’re busy dealing with mental health issues.
6. Write a Letter to Your Body. Mental illness often changes how you view your body. Whether you want to write a love letter, some complaints, or a letter of apology, it’s important to address your body image.
7. List and Describe Your Emotions. What did you feel like today? List out every emotion that you went through and describe how it felt in that moment. This tool will help you identify the causes of your emotions and how you’re responding to them.
8. Write About How You’d Describe Yourself to a Stranger. If you were going to explain who you are to a stranger, how would that go? What are your likes, your dislikes, your strengths, or your weaknesses?
9. Describe the Best Compliment You’ve Ever Gotten. What was the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you? How did it make you feel, and how did that moment play out?
10. Write a Message for Yourself on Bad Days. Bad mental health days happen, and there isn’t much you can do to prevent them. However, you can prepare for them by writing a message to yourself.
