1. Hydrate, but don’t overdo it. “Contrary to popular belief, no studies have proven over-hydration as an effective practice in enhancing kidney function,” says nephrologist James Simon, MD.
2. Eat healthy foods. Dr. Simon points out that most kidney problems arise out of other medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
3. Exercise regularly. Like eating a well-balanced diet, regular physical activity can stave off weight gain and high blood pressure. But do be mindful of how much exercise you do, especially if you’re not conditioned.
4. Use caution with supplements and herbal remedies. Excessive amounts of certain vitamin supplements and some herbal extracts may be harmful to your kidneys.
5. Quit smoking (and vaping!). Smoking can damage blood vessels, which decreases the flow of blood in the kidneys. When the kidneys don’t have adequate blood flow, they can’t function at optimal levels.
6. Don’t overdo it with over-the-counter medications. “Common non-prescription pills like ibuprofen and naproxen (NSAIDs) can cause kidney damage if taken too regularly over a prolonged period,” Dr. Simon says.
7. If you’re at risk, get regular kidney function screening. “If you have diabetes, high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease, your physician should screen for kidney dysfunction as part of routine care for those conditions,” Dr. Simon says.

7. Be aware of the amount of OTC pills you take. If you regularly take over-the-counter (OTC) pain medication, you may be causing kidney damage. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including ibuprofen and naproxen, can damage your kidneys if you take them regularly for chronic pain, headaches, or arthritis.
8. Have your kidney function tested if you’re at high risk. If you’re at high risk of kidney damage or kidney disease, it’s a good idea to have regular kidney function tests.

1. Your pair of kidneys is lopsided. Kidneys are located in the lower back—right below the rib cage—and they’re usually asymmetrical. Your right kidney tends to be smaller and sit a little lower than your left one because it needs to make room for the liver, whose bulkiest part is situated on the right side of your body.
2. There’s a reason why you only need one kidney to live. Most people have two kidneys at birth, but only one kidney is needed to lead a healthy life. Each kidney has about 1.5 million blood-filtering units called nephrons, which help remove a waste product called urea from blood as it flows through the organs.
3. Your kidneys filter about 45 gallons of blood per day. Although the heart is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body, the kidneys are doing their fair share of work, too.
4. Kidneys make pee. As part of the body’s urinary system, kidneys create urine from urea, water, and other waste products. The fluid flows from the kidney’s tubules, which are found inside the nephrons, to two tubes called ureters.
5. Ancient Egyptians may have been the first people to describe kidneys. Prior to 2018, it was commonly thought that ancient Egyptians had no knowledge of the kidneys, even though their understanding of medicine and the human body was advanced in other ways.
6. Kidneys are mentioned frequently in the Bible. The kidneys are cited more than 30 times in the Bible—far more frequently than the heart, which was rarely mentioned.
7. A procedure for removing kidney stones used to be deadly. These days, if a patient is unable to pass a kidney stone naturally (albeit painfully), laser and high-frequency sound wave treatments can be used to break the hard mineral deposits into smaller pieces.
8. A Dutch doctor used sausage casing, orange juice cans, and a washing machine to invent an "artificial kidney" that predated dialysis. At the start of World War II, not long after Germany invaded the Netherlands, Dutch doctor Willem Kolff got to work inventing an artificial kidney that evolved into modern-day dialysis.
9. Drinking too much water can be bad for kidneys. Staying hydrated helps keep your kidneys in good working order, but on the flip side, you don’t want to drink too much water.
10. Too much ibuprofen and aspirin can also harm kidneys. All drugs pass through your kidneys, so you want to be careful what you’re feeding them. If used daily for long periods of time, pain medications like ibuprofen, higher-dose aspirin, and naproxen (Aleve) can damage kidneys and potentially cause a disease called chronic interstitial nephritis.

3. Protein. Protein provides the building blocks that help maintain and repair muscles, organs, and other parts of the body. Protein is in many foods you eat, including foods from animals and plants.
4. Phosphorus. Phosphorus is balanced with calcium to keep your bones healthy. When you have kidney disease, phosphorus can build up in your blood. Too much phosphorus can weaken your bones.
5. Potassium. Potassium is a mineral that helps your nerves and muscles work. Potassium is found in fruits and vegetables such as oranges, bananas, tomatoes, and potatoes.
6. Supplements for people with kidney failure. Supplements help provide some of the vitamins and minerals you may be missing, either because you need to avoid certain foods or because your treatment removes some vitamins from your body.
7. Calories. You need energy to fuel your body. Energy is measured in calories. Taking in more calories than your body uses can cause weight gain and high blood sugar.

1. Don’t Overdo Certain Medications. NSAIDs are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like ibuprofen and naproxen. They can damage your kidneys if you take too many at once or take them too often.
2. Take Care With Antibiotics. These bacteria-fighting drugs can damage your kidneys if you use them too often. It can happen even if you’re perfectly healthy, though it’s more serious if your kidneys don’t work as well as they should.
3. Skip Herbal Supplements. Supplement makers don’t have to prove their products are safe, and some can damage your kidneys. Those can be especially harmful if you have kidney disease because they can make the condition worse or affect how some medicines work.
4. Eat Healthy. Your kidneys process everything you eat or drink, including anything that’s bad for you, like lots of fat, salt, and sugar. Over time, a bad diet can lead to high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and other conditions that are hard on your kidneys.
5. Watch Your Salt. This mineral affects people in different ways. For some, it seems to raise the amount of protein in their urine. That can harm your kidneys or make kidney disease worse if you already have it.
6. Drink Enough Water. Water helps get important nutrients to your kidneys and move waste to your bladder in the form of urine. If you don’t drink enough, the tiny filters inside your kidneys can get stopped up and lead to kidney stones and infections.
7. Exercise. Just like a healthy diet, this helps prevent conditions like diabetes and heart disease that can lead to kidney damage. But don’t try to go from couch potato to gym rat in a day.
8. Get Screened. It’s important to know your risk for kidney disease. It’s more likely if you or close relatives have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of kidney failure.
9. Be Careful With Alcohol. If you’re healthy, a drink or two isn’t likely to hurt your kidneys. But binge drinking (having more than four drinks in less than 2 hours) can cause sudden, serious damage and possibly lead to long-term problems.
10. Quit Smoking. Smoking raises your risk of kidney cancer and damages blood vessels, which affects your kidneys by slowing blood flow to them. Plus, smoking can affect certain drugs that treat high blood pressure.
