Just Now

1. The Parts of the Eye. You can check out different parts of the eye by looking at your own eye in the mirror or by looking at (but not touching) a friend's eye.
2. Big as a Ping Pong Ball. The eye is about as big as a ping-pong ball and sits in a little hollow area (the eye socket) in the skull. The eyelid protects the front part of the eye.
3. Iris Is The Colorful Part. Behind the cornea are the iris, the pupil, and the anterior chamber. The iris (say: EYE-riss) is the colorful part of the eye.
4. Light, Lens, Action. These next parts are really cool, but you can't see them with just your own eyes! Doctors use special microscopes to look at these inner parts of the eye, such as the lens.
5. A Muscle Makes It Work. The lens is suspended in the eye by a bunch of fibers. These fibers are attached to a muscle called the ciliary (say: SIL-ee-air-ee) body.
6. Rods and Cones Process Light. The retina uses special cells called rods and cones to process light. Just how many rods and cones does your retina have? How about 120 million rods and 7 million cones — in each eye!
7. Helping You See It All. Rods and cones process the light to give you the total picture. You're able to see that your friend has brown skin and is wearing a blue hat while he tosses an orange basketball.
8. To the Brain! Think of the optic nerve as the great messenger in the back of your eye. The rods and cones of the retina change the colors and shapes you see into millions of nerve messages.
9. Have No Fear, You Have Tears. For crying out loud, the eye has its own special bathing system — tears! Above the outer corner of each eye are the lacrimal (say: LAK-ruh-mul) glands, which make tears.

Healthy Nei.nih.gov Get All

1. Eat right to protect your sight. Keep your eyes healthy by eating a well-balanced diet. Load up on different types of fruits and veggies, especially leafy greens like spinach, kale, and collard greens.
2. Get moving. Did you know that kids who exercise often have a healthier body weight than kids who don’t? Being overweight or obese can put you at higher risk for diabetes and other conditions that can lead to vision problems.
3. Speak up if your vision changes. Is your vision blurry? Do you squint a lot? Ever have trouble seeing things at school? Tell a parent or teacher if your eyes are bothering you or if you notice any changes in your vision.
4. Wear your glasses. Your glasses help you see better, especially when they’re clean and free of smudges. Talk to an adult about how to clean your glasses and how to store them when you’re not wearing them.
5. Keep the germs away. Always wash your hands before putting them close to your eyes, especially if you’re putting in or taking out contact lenses.
6. Gear up. Playing your favorite sport? Using chemicals during science class? Mowing the lawn? Wear the right protection to keep your eyes safe. Many eye injuries can be prevented with better safety habits, such as using protective eyewear.
7. Wear your shades. The sun’s rays can hurt your eyes. Choose sunglasses that block 99% or 100% of both UVA and UVB radiation from the sun. And remember, you should never look directly at the sun.
8. Give your eyes a break. Do you spend a lot of time looking at a computer, phone, or TV screen? Staring at any one thing for too long can tire your eyes.
9. Say no to smoking. Did you know that smoking is as bad for your eyes as it is the rest of your body? Smoking can put you at risk for some pretty serious eye issues, which can lead to blindness.
10. Talk about it. Does anyone in your family have issues with their eyes? Not sure? Ask! Talking about eye health with your family can help all of you stay healthy.

10 Simple Eye Care Tips For Kids & Ways To Improve …

1. Healthy diet. A healthy diet is essential for a child’s vision, as well as other functions and growth (2). You may encourage them to consume healthy foods, including fresh vegetables, eggs, fish, meat, and fruits.
2. Drink plenty of water. An adequate amount of hydration is needed for eye health. You may encourage your child to drink a minimum of four full glasses of water daily.
3. Get good sleep. An adequate amount of sleep is required for good eye health (3). A good night’s sleep helps rejuvenate the body and relaxes the eyes. You may encourage your kid to fall into a regular sleeping routine to promote ocular health.
4. Ensure accurate use of contact lenses and eyeglasses. Children may not be cautious with contact lenses or eyeglasses. You may encourage and teach them the proper ways to wear it.
5. Limit screen time. Children tend to use smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, and computers as much as possible. Using these devices for extended periods may strain the eyes.
6. Encourage outdoor activities. The onset and progression of myopia (short-sightedness) in kids can be prevented by spending more time outdoors (5). You may encourage children to play outside rather than indoor games or video games.
7. Discourage eye rubbing. Children tend to rub their eyes, especially if they have eye irritation or some foreign bodies in the eye. Rubbing may damage the eyes, and often, germs from hands can pass into the eyes and cause conditions such as conjunctivitis.
8. Eye protection. Children are at high risk for eye injuries while playing games and sports. You may ensure their eyes are well protected from the sun and other injuries during their activities.
9. Use safe toys. Younger children have a higher risk of eye injuries from toys. You may choose safe toys for them, especially for toddlers. Avoid rough and sharp toys since they may cause accidental eye injuries.
10. Regular eye checkups. Regular eye checkups may help determine eyesight problems in kids. Early diagnosis and interventions could help protect vision in most cases.

6 Tips for Eye Health and Maintaining Good Eyesight

Tips Webmd.com Get All

1. Eat Well. Good eye health starts with the food on your plate. Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E might help ward off age-related vision problems like macular degeneration and cataracts.
2. Quit Smoking. It makes you more likely to get cataracts, damage to your optic nerve, and macular degeneration, among many other medical problems. If you've tried to kick the habit before only to start again, keep at it.
3. Wear Sunglasses. The right pair of shades will help protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Too much UV exposure boosts your chances of cataracts and macular degeneration.
4. Use Safety Eyewear. If you use hazardous or airborne materials on the job or at home, wear safety glasses or protective goggles. Sports like ice hockey, racquetball, and lacrosse can also lead to eye injury.
5. Look Away From the Computer Screen. Staring at a computer or phone screen for too long can cause: Eyestrain. Blurry vision. Trouble focusing at a distance. Dry eyes.
6. Visit Your Eye Doctor Regularly. Everyone needs a regular eye exam, even young children. It helps protect your sight and lets you see your best. Eye exams can also find diseases, like glaucoma, that have no symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I do to protect my child's eyesight?

As kids may not be aware of how to protect their eyes from injuries and vision loss, you may teach them ways to prevent eye injuries and infections. You may also screen your child for vision problems and take the necessary steps to protect and improve eyesight. Protecting your child’s eyesight begins in pregnancy.

What should be included in a child's eye exam?

Children’s eye exams should include the following components: Inspection of the eye: The health care provider inspects the eyes and eyelids, exams the various eye muscle movements, and examines the pupils and the reflection of light from the back of the eye. Ophthalmoscope: In older children, the eye care professional examines the back of the eye.

How does eye care work for older children?

Ophthalmoscope: In older children, the eye care professional examines the back of the eye. Corneal light reflex testing: Using a small flashlight, the health care provider looks at spot where the light is reflected from the front surface of the eye, called the cornea. The light reflected should be in sharp focus and centered on both pupils.

When to take your child to the eye doctor?

“For many children, an evaluation by a pediatrician may be enough. But if a child has a family history of vision or eye problems or has symptoms, he or she may need to have an official eye exam ,” he says.
