The skills are grouped under five core competencies: communication, leadership, professionalism, knowledge, and business skills. Successful healthcare administrators apply the competencies on a day-to-day basis in healthcare organizations.
The nursing administrator has core competencies in five different areas (American Organization of Nurse Executives, 2005). Those five areas of core competencies are communication and relationship building, knowledge of the health care environment, leadership, professionalism, and business skills (American Organization of Nurse Executives, 2005).

Definition: Knowledge, attitudes, and associated behaviors which pertain to health-related topics such as PATHOLOGIC PROCESSES or diseases, their prevention, and treatment. This term refers to non-health workers and health workers (HEALTH PERSONNEL).
