Obama Student Loan Forgiveness: The Truth Comes Out

12.29.2355 hours ago

1. The Obama Student Loan Forgiveness Program got started when, in 2009, the income-based repayment (IBR) plan first became available to students and graduates who made on time payments through the Obama administration. When the IBR payment plan was introduced, monthly payments were required at no more than 15% of a borrower’s discretionary income. Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best way to pay off federal student loans?

Income-driven repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) This is one of the best options to stay on the road to repayment for federal student loan borrowers whose student loan debt is high relative to their income. Income-driven repayment plans tie your payment to your income and family size.

Is the pay as you Earn program student loan forgiveness?

Here’s why: The Pay As You Earn Program is a great way to get student loan forgiveness while also making your student loan payments reasonable. This plan sponsored by Obama is technically a repayment program, not a student loan forgiveness program, which is one of the ways he was able to sign it into law.

Is there a penalty for paying off a student loan?

You'll pay off your loan faster and pay less in interest if you choose to make extra payments toward principal. For most federal loans and private (non-federal) loans, you can make additional payments at any time without a penalty.

When did pay as you earn student loan start?

The REPAYE program eliminated that requirement. No matter what your salary, your payments will never be more than 10% of your income based on family size. President Barack Obama first announced the PAYE plan in Oct. 2011 and it has become synonymous with the ‘Obama Student Loan Plan.’
