1. Dry Skin and Itching. Many older people suffer from dry spots on their skin, often on their lower legs, elbows, and lower arms. Dry skin patches feel rough and scaly.
2. Bruises. Older people may bruise more easily than younger people. It can take longer for these bruises to heal. Some medicines or illnesses may also cause bruising.
3. Wrinkles. Over time, skin begins to wrinkle. Things in the environment, like ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun, can make the skin less elastic. Gravity can cause skin to sag and wrinkle.
4. Age Spots and Skin Tags. Age spots, once called "liver spots," are flat, brown spots often caused by years in the sun. They are bigger than freckles and commonly show up on areas like the face, hands, arms, back, and feet.
5. Skin Cancer. Skin cancer is a very common type of cancer in the United States. The main cause of skin cancer is the sun. Sunlamps and tanning booths can also cause skin cancer.

Skin care: 5 tips for healthy skin Mayo Clinic

Skin Mayoclinic.org Get All

Published: Oct 15, 2019
1. Protect yourself from the sun. One of the most important ways to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun. A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems — as well as increase the risk of skin cancer.
2. Don't smoke. Smoking makes your skin look older and contributes to wrinkles. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow and makes skin paler.
3. Treat your skin gently. Daily cleansing and shaving can take a toll on your skin. To keep it gentle: Limit bath time. Hot water and long showers or baths remove oils from your skin.
4. Eat a healthy diet. A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. The association between diet and acne isn't clear — but some research suggests that a diet rich in fish oil or fish oil supplements and low in unhealthy fats and processed or refined carbohydrates might promote younger looking skin.
5. Manage stress. Uncontrolled stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. To encourage healthy skin — and a healthy state of mind — take steps to manage your stress.

The 12 Best Foods for Healthy Skin

The Healthline.com Get All

1. Fatty fish. Fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, and herring, are excellent foods for healthy skin. They’re rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for maintaining skin health (1).
2. Avocados. Avocados are high in healthy fats. These fats benefit many functions in your body, including the health of your skin (7). Getting enough of these fats is essential to help keep skin flexible and moisturized.
3. Walnuts. Walnuts have many characteristics that make them an excellent food for healthy skin. They’re a good source of essential fatty acids, which are fats that your body cannot make itself.
4. Sunflower seeds. In general, nuts and seeds are good sources of skin-boosting nutrients. Sunflower seeds are an excellent example. One ounce (28 grams) of sunflower seeds packs 49% of the DV for vitamin E, 41% of the DV for selenium, 14% of the DV for zinc, and 5.5 grams of protein (15).
5. Sweet potatoes. Beta carotene is a nutrient found in plants. It functions as provitamin A, which means it can be converted into vitamin A in your body.
6. Red or yellow bell peppers. Like sweet potatoes, bell peppers are an excellent source of beta carotene, which your body converts into vitamin A. One cup (149 grams) of chopped red bell pepper contains the equivalent of 156% of the DV for vitamin A (18).
7. Broccoli. Broccoli is full of many vitamins and minerals important for skin health, including zinc, vitamin A, and vitamin C (20). It also contains lutein, a carotenoid that works like beta carotene.
8. Tomatoes. Tomatoes are a great source of vitamin C and contain all of the major carotenoids, including lycopene. Beta carotene, lutein, and lycopene have been shown to protect your skin against damage from the sun.
9. Soy. Soy contains isoflavones, a category of plant compounds that can either mimic or block estrogen in your body. Isoflavones may benefit several parts of your body, including your skin.
10. Dark chocolate. If you need one more reason to eat chocolate, here it is: The effects of cocoa on your skin are pretty phenomenal. After 6–12 weeks of consuming a cocoa powder high in antioxidants each day, participants in one study experienced thicker, more hydrated skin.

The 15 Best Vitamins & Nutrients for Healthy Skin

The Webmd.com Get All

1. Healthy Fats. This is how your skin gets its "glow." Too little fat in your diet can make your skin wrinkled and dry. Focus on monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats from plants like nuts, seeds, and avocados and from fish.
2. Protein. Your body turns the proteins you eat into building blocks called amino acids and reuses them to make other proteins, including the collagen and keratin that form the structure of skin.
3. Vitamin A. Both the upper and lower layers of skin need vitamin A. It seems to prevent sun damage by interrupting the process that breaks down collagen.
4. Vitamin C. Think "C" for collagen: This vitamin helps the twisted web of protein hold its shape. It's also a powerful antioxidant, protecting you from free radicals and possibly lowering your chance of skin cancer.
5. Vitamin E. This antioxidant and anti-inflammatory can also absorb the energy from UV light, which damages skin and leads to wrinkles, sagging, and skin cancer.
6. Zinc. The outer layer of your skin has five times more of this mineral than the layer underneath. Zinc helps your skin heal after an injury. It's needed to keep cell walls stable and for cells to divide and specialize as they grow.
7. Selenium. Selenium is a mineral that helps certain antioxidants protect your skin from UV rays. Selenium deficiency has been linked with a greater chance of skin cancer.
8. Foods and Supplements. In general, fruits and vegetables are good choices because they have skin-friendly vitamins and other antioxidants. Some foods pack more than one nutrient for your skin, which often helps them work better

1. Vitamin A for skin. Vitamin A contributes to skin clarity by decreasing the size of sebaceous glands, resulting in less oil production. (10) Without adequate vitamin A, dead skin cells can accumulate in the pores leading to breakouts.
2. Vitamin C for skin. It is common knowledge that vitamin C supports immune function, but did you also know that it can improve skin health and appearance?
3. Collagen supplements for skin. Collagen is a type of protein found in the bones, connective tissues, and skin. As we age, collagen production naturally declines, resulting in visible skin aging.
4. Magnesium for skin. If you are experiencing hormonal or stress-related acne, consider speaking to your healthcare practitioner about increasing your magnesium intake.
5. Omega-3 fatty acids for skin. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, nuts, seeds, and some plant foods, are commonly considered one of the most effective natural anti-inflammatory nutrients.
6. Vitamin E for skin. As a powerful antioxidant, vitamin E protects the skin by neutralizing free radicals that can cause visible skin aging. (34)(37) Food sources of vitamin E include leafy greens, nuts, and seeds.
7. Vitamin D for skin. Best known for its role in structural health, vitamin D also plays a role in skin health. Vitamin D can be obtained from supplements, sun exposure, and dietary sources.
8. Zinc for skin. Zinc, found in dietary sources such as meat, nuts, legumes, and whole grains, is an essential trace mineral necessary for optimal skin health.

5 ways to improve skin health

1. Eat a healthful diet. There is a multibillion-dollar industry dedicated to products that keep your skin looking its best, and which claim to fight signs of aging.
2. Keep stress in check. Have you ever noticed that right before an important event, an unsightly pimple appears on your face? Well, scientists have identified some links between stress levels and skin problems.
3. Keep moisture in the skin. Skin moisturizers keep the top layer of skin cells hydrated and seal in moisture. Moisturizers often contain humectants to attract moisture, occlusive agents to retain moisture in the skin, and emollients to smooth the spaces between skin cells.
4. Quit smoking. Smoking ages facial skin and skin located in other body areas. Smoking narrows the blood vessels found in the outer layer of the skin, which reduces blood flow and exhausts the skin of the nutrients and oxygen it needs to remain healthy.
5. Get your beauty sleep. Getting your beauty sleep will banish those dark circles around your eyes and improve your skin tone, and, best of all, it is free.
